چکیده

We propose that social entrepreneurs may act as altruistic brokers helping their beneficiaries patch the structural holes separate disenfranchised and marginalized individuals groups from opportunities, resources, capabilities available to more privileged actors. test our model on a database of received funding Schwab Foundation Ashoka. Our case analysis frequency performed in NVivo shows entrepreneurs’ institutional work comprises: (1) bridging: gain access resources opportunities; (2) enabling: develop capabilities; (3) bonding: form cohesive networks. Furthermore, some these key types take lead depending various contextual factors so either bridging, enabling, or bonding become dominant.

Structural holes in social networks

We consider a setting where every pair of players that undertake a transaction (e.g. exchange goods or information) create a unit surplus. A transaction can take place only if the players involved have a connection. If the connection is direct the two players split the surplus equally while if it is indirect then intermediate players also get an equal share of the surplus. Thus individuals form...

How Do Brokers Broker? Tertius Gaudens, Tertius Iungens, and the Temporality of Structural Holes

Organizational network research has demonstrated that multiple benefits accrue to people occupying brokerage positions. However, the extant literature offers scant evidence of the process postulated to drive such benefits –information brokerage– and therefore leaves unaddressed the question of how brokers broker. Structural Holes in Social Networks with Exogenous Cliques

It has been empirically shown that structural holes in social networks enable potential large benefits to those individuals who bridge them (Burt, 2004). The work in Goyal and Vega-Redondo (2007) shows that the large payoff differentials caused by structural holes can persist even when agents strategically add and remove ties to smooth those differentials, thereby providing a game-theoretic rat...
